Rep. Zeiger’s higher ed efficiency bill signed into law

A bill introduced by 25th District Rep. Hans Zeiger that would make the state’s higher education system more efficient was signed into law by Gov. Jay Inslee on Friday, May 10.

House Bill 1736 will set up a review of reporting requirements that the state imposes on colleges and universities, allows college and university employees to use electronic signatures, and allows reciprocity agreements for online distance learning programs. It includes a Senate amendment to allow students to set up student advisory committees on their campuses to ensure better communication about budgeting and campus administration.

“This bill was really a win-win for colleges and universities, students, and taxpayers,” said Zeiger, R-Puyallup. “With the budget cuts and tuition increases of the past several years, it is critical that we do everything we can to find efficiencies and reduce costs. And we need to ensure that students have an open line of communication with university decision-makers.”

The law will take effect on July 28, 2013.
