Rep. Hans Zeiger appointed to Joint Committee on Veterans' and Military Affairs

Rep. Hans Zeiger has been appointed to serve on the Joint Committee on Veterans' and Military Affairs by House Speaker Frank Chopp.

"We are blessed to have so many service members living and serving in the South Sound," said Zeiger, R-Puyallup. "We need to do all we can to ensure Washington state is a welcoming place for soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines. We also owe our neighbors who have served in the past our continued thanks. Our veterans should be included in policy discussions of all kinds, and we should ensure that benefits and incentives are in place to keep veterans in Washington when they leave active service."

As the ranking Republican on the House Higher Education Committee, Zeiger said that the Legislature has "made progress on veterans' access to higher education in the past few years, but we need to do more. We need to make Washington state colleges and universities the most veteran-friendly higher education institutions in America."

In 2012, Gov. Christine Gregoire signed legislation sponsored by Zeiger allowing recipients of the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Distinguished Service Cross, Air Force Cross, and Navy Cross to display special decals on their license plates. Zeiger was inspired to introduce the bill by a D-Day veteran living in the 25th District.

Outside the Legislature, Zeiger currently serves as an officer in the Washington Air National Guard. He is a member of the 194th Wing headquartered at Camp Murray near Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

The bipartisan 16-member Joint Committee on Veterans’ and Military Affairs was created in 2001 and studies issues regarding veterans, active military forces and the National Guard. Members are tasked with making recommendations to the Legislature. The committee also studies the structure and administration of the Washington State Department of Veterans’ Affairs and the military department.
